24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is a diagnostic test that continuously measures and records a patient’s blood pressure over a 24-hour period as they go about their daily activities, including sleep. Unlike a single blood pressure reading taken in a clinic, ABPM provides a comprehensive picture of blood pressure variations throughout the day and night.

The test involves wearing a small, portable blood pressure monitor attached to a cuff placed around the upper arm. The device automatically inflates and records readings at regular intervals (typically every 15–30 minutes during the day and 30–60 minutes at night). This allows healthcare providers to analyze patterns, including daytime activity, nighttime sleep, and changes due to stress or medication.

Benefits of ABPM:

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Helps confirm or rule out conditions like white coat hypertension (elevated BP in a clinical setting) and masked hypertension (normal BP in clinics but elevated at home).
  • Monitoring Effectiveness: Evaluates the impact of antihypertensive medications and lifestyle interventions.
  • Nighttime Blood Pressure: Provides insights into nocturnal hypertension (elevated BP during sleep), a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
  • Personalized Treatment: Assists doctors in creating tailored treatment plans based on detailed blood pressure trends.

ABPM is a valuable tool for diagnosing and managing hypertension, predicting cardiovascular risk, and ensuring better long-term health outcomes. It is non-invasive, reliable, and widely recommended for patients with fluctuating or uncertain blood pressure readings.
